You may think your home or apartment is clean – but is it? Beyond washing dishes and taking out the trash, some often overlooked areas could use attention to keep your space looking presentable. Ready to up your cleaning game? Check out these 10 commonly missed items so that next time someone stays the night they say “Oh!” and not “Oh no…”
1. Air Vents & Filters
Dust loves to gather in air vents and filters, decreasing air quality and potentially raising your utility bill by blocking airflow. Our maintenance team will change the air filters quarterly, but be sure to vacuum the AC closet vents or air vents often to avoid buildup.
2. Behind Appliances
The areas behind your washer, dryer, fridge, and stove are prime dust, crumb, and bug hideouts. A quick sweep or vacuum behind these every few weeks helps keep the place cleaner and can prevent pest problems.
3. Ceiling Fans
Fan blades quickly gather dust, which spreads around the room when the fan is turned on. Give them a quick wipe-down every couple of weeks to help reduce indoor allergies.
4. Dish Rack & Drying Mat
Leftover water on these items can lead to mold and mildew. A quick wash with soap and water every couple of weeks will keep them clean and mildew-free.
5. Dryer
Yes, your dryer needs cleaning too! Emptying the lint trap after every load is essential for preventing fires. Take a moment to remind your roommates while you’re at it.
6. Fridge
If a mystery odor lingers, it’s time for a deep clean starting with your fridge. Every few months, empty it, scrub the shelves and get rid of expired food. Pro tip: use water and soap to flush out food and grime stuck in hard-to-reach areas!
7. Inside the Microwave
Splattered food can make your microwave sticky and smelly. Wipe it down every couple of weeks (or when you notice messes) to keep it sparkly clean. Don’t forget to wash the microwave plate, too.
8. Shower
If you weren’t cleaning your shower before, consider starting. Make sure to scrub your shower walls and floors at least twice a month (more if you share a bathroom). Clean out the drain (which can get clogged with hair) and wash the shower curtain and bath mat while you’re at it to make sure it’s all refreshed. If you plan on saving water and showering with a friend, you’ll want to make sure your bathroom is sparkling clean before!
9. Trash Cans
Even if you use liners, sticky messes, and odors still build up inside trash cans. Every few weeks, rinse them out with soap and water to prevent lingering smells.
10. Under Furniture
When you sweep, vacuum, or mop, don’t skip under the couch, bed, or other furniture. Dust and dirt build up fast—and you might even find that missing sock!
