The holidays are right around the corner, meaning it’s almost time to go home for the break! But before you pack your bags and hit the road, it’s important to make sure your apartment or house is ready to be left alone. A little prep can save you from unwanted surprises when you return, like skyrocketing utility bills or a bug-infested kitchen. Here are 8 things you should do before leaving for the break:
1. Lock Up & Secure Your Space
This might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people rush out the door and forget to lock up. Double-check all doors and windows to make sure they’re secure. If you live with roommates, coordinate to see who’s leaving last, so they can give the place one final check.
2. Adjust Your Thermostat
Nobody wants to come back to a place that feels like a freezer or sauna. Set your thermostat to a temperature that saves energy but keeps your space livable. If it’s cold out, make sure your pipes won’t freeze by keeping the heat on low. In warmer months, avoid returning to humidity by leaving the air conditioning running at a modest level. Please remember to NEVER turn the AC completely off.
3. Unplug Electronics
Laptops, TVs, and gaming consoles all eat up energy, even when they’re off. Unplugging them will not only save you money but also reduce the risk of electrical issues. Plus, it gives you peace of mind knowing your devices aren’t secretly running up your utility bill.
4. Take Out the Trash (Please)
This might be the most important one—nobody wants to come back to a smelly room or a kitchen crawling with bugs. Empty the trash, clear out any old food in the fridge, and make sure your place is clean before you head out.
5. Secure Your Valuables
If you have anything valuable, like jewelry or electronics, consider locking them away or taking them with you. For extra protection, consider getting renter’s insurance which ensures all your personal belongings in case of theft, natural disasters, and fire.
6. Water Your Plants (or Ask Someone To)
For all the plant parents out there, don’t forget your leafy friends. If you’re going away for an extended period, consider getting a friend to water your plants or take them with you. We don’t want you coming back to dead plants!
7. Turn Off the Water
Before you leave, check for dripping faucets, showers, and running toilets. If you have worries about potential leaks while you are away, you can turn off the house’s water supply.
8. Check Everything Before You Leave
Before you head out, take one last walkthrough of your space. Make sure the stove is off, windows are closed, and lights are off. A quick walk-through can help you avoid any “Wait, did I forget…?” moments when you’re already halfway home.
Once you’ve made sure everything is taken care of, you’ll be ready to make your way home and relax. We hope you can rest and enjoy the holiday season!
