8 Tips for a Smooth Move-in

The new semester is approaching, and with it, move-in day. We warmly welcome new and returning tenants to the Jackson Properties family! Moving into your place is exciting: newfound freedom, new roommates, and a new area to explore. But, before the fun starts, you’ll need to get some things in order. Organizing everything will give you peace of mind as you begin this new semester and settle into your home. Follow these 8 tips for a smooth move-in:

  1. Check for damages. Whether moving into a house or apartment, you should always inspect the place first. Take pictures and report any damages on the “Existing Damages” form we send you. Report any broken appliances on the “Move-In Maintenance” form. This helps you recover as much of your security deposit as possible (assuming you don’t cause any damages to the home) and prevents you from being held responsible for any damages caused by previous tenants. Just in case, we advise holding onto these pics until the end of your lease!
  2. Start clean. Before you start unpacking your bags, clean up any spots that need attention (i.e. sweeping and mopping, wiping mirrors and counters, cleaning the bathroom, etc.). Starting with a clean space will help you feel more at ease as you settle in.
  3. Set up important areas. Set up the most important areas, like your bathroom and bedroom, so they can be used when needed, and then keep going with the rest. Add your personal touches and decorations as you go along to make yourself feel more at home!
  4. Store valuable items. Anything of value (i.e. keys, money, documents, etc.) should be sorted out and stored as soon as possible in a place where they won’t be easily lost. Pro tip: If you’re forgetful, note down where you put them so you have it for reference later – your future self will thank you. You may also want to consider renter’s insurance for added protection and peace of mind.
  5. Talk with your roommates. Whether living with best friends, acquaintances, or people you’ve just met, you need to communicate with them from the beginning. When you first move in, ask and answer these questions to ensure everyone is on the same page from day one: How will we split home expenses? How will we handle chores? Is everyone okay with having people over? This will save you a lot of uncomfortable convos later – trust us!
  6. Introduce yourself to your neighbors. We’re not saying you need to bake homemade cookies and bring them to all your neighbors, but if you see them in passing, it doesn’t hurt to introduce yourself. Especially if you’re planning to party or tailgate at your home – you’ll need to have a good relationship with those around you!
  7. Check how long it takes to get to class. For those new to Tally, you’ll need to check and see how long it takes you to get to class from where you live. Remember to set aside time for finding parking and walking to class (which tends to take longer during sylly week)!
  8. Scope out the area. Find the grocery stores, restaurants, and gas stations nearest to you and see how long it takes to get there. Most Jackson Properties homes are just a few minutes’ drive to Publix, ALDI, and Target stores. Other popular spots include Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Gordos, Palace Saloon, and Bajas
